Wildfires keep on spreading in Transbaikal territory
CHITA. May 11 (Interfax) - The area affected by wildfires has doubled in the Transbaikal territory to 845 hectares over the past 24 hours, while the number of fires decreased by two to eight, the local natural resources ministry said in a report.
As of 8 a.m. local time on Thursday, five forest fires were burning across 742 hectares in the Mogoitui, Mogocha, Nerchinsk and Nerchinsko-Zavodsky districts, and three fires were contained on 103 hectares in the Sretensk, Tungokochensky and Chernyshevsk districts, the report said.
"Most forest fires were caused by the human factor and spread due to high winds," the report said.
There is no threat to populated localities. The fires are being fought by 253 people using 39 pieces of equipment.
A wildfire emergency has been in place in the Transbaikal territory.
