Moscow storm kills 11 people - source

MOSCOW. May 29 (Interfax) - Eleven people were killed in Moscow by a violent storm on Monday, a source with knowledge on the matter told Interfax.

"Reports on 11 deaths in Moscow had been received as of 5:30 p.m.," the source said.

Most of the people killed by the storm died after various objects, primarily trees downed by the wind, fell on them, he said.

In the meantime, according to the source, there are no children among the victims of the natural calamity.

In the meantime, the number of victims of today's storm is higher than the number of people hurt by a similar natural calamity that happened in Moscow in June 1998, when nine people were killed and 165 were injured in a storm.

According to the information provided by the city authorities, the storm that happened 19 years ago downed over 110,000 trees, broke the lights in 193 streets, led to power outages in 905 buildings, damaged 147 kilometers of power lines and some 950 light poles. Some 2,500 residential buildings suffered various damage and the roofs were damaged on 1,700 buildings.

The total damage done by the natural calamity that hit Moscow in the early hours of June 21, 1998 was estimated at some one billion rubles.
