Putin praises Russian Security Council's role in protecting national interests

MOSCOW. June 2 (Interfax) - Since its creation the Russian Security Council has been tackling key problems facing modern-day Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a greeting to the Security Council members and staff on the occasion of the organization's 25th anniversary.

"Dear comrades! Congratulations on the 25th anniversary since the creation of the Russian Security Council. All these years the Security Council has been on top of key issues facing modern-day Russia," Putin said in the address read out by Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev.

Throughout its existence the Security Council has been working on and making important decisions on defense, national interests, Russia's social-economic development and participation in global and regional processes, the president said.

"Today you are facing new, no less demanding, challenges. Their efficient resolution directly depends on each one of the Security Council members and staff, on your competence, professionalism, honest approach towards your duties," Putin, who chairs the Security Council, said.

He wished successes to the staff.

Also, at the meeting Patrushev read out the president's letter of thanks to the Security Council staff "for the great contribution in providing Russia's national security and efficient execution of set tasks."
