Poroshenko demands public account of investigation into Sheremet's killing
KYIV. June 6 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has demanded that Ukrainian law enforcement agencies present a public account of whatever progress is made in the investigation into journalist Pavel Sheremet's killing.
"Is the journalist's work protected today? No. There are certain litmus test cases, such as Pavel Sheremet's killing. And I feel pain here, in my heart, just as you do. I am with you. I demand that the law enforcement agencies give a public account of the investigation into Pavel Sheremet's killing," Poroshenko said in an address on the occasion of Journalists Day on Tuesday.
The public should know the details of the investigation except those that should be kept secret to safeguard it, he said.
"I insist that we should do all we can so that in this case, just as in other cases dealing with harassment of journalists, attacks on them, or, God forbid, murders, those who perpetrated and ordered the crimes be held accountable," he said.
It had been reported earlier that a car belonging to Olena Prytula, the head of the Ukrayinska Pravda online publication, had been blown up while Sheremet was driving it in central Kyiv at 7:45 a.m. on July 20, 2016. The journalist died on the spot soon after the explosion.
Detectives said they believed that Sheremet was killed due to his journalistic activity in Ukraine and other countries.
