BRICS Network University to comprise 60 universities - UN special rapporteur

YEKATERINBURG. June 8 (Interfax) - About 60 higher educational institutions will unite within the framework of the BRICS Network University, UN Special Rapporteur for the right to education Kishore Singh said.

The entire network of universities united within the BRICS is being set up. This is currently 12 universities, a total of 60 universities are planned to be merged, Kishore said at a press conference arranged by Interfax in Yekaterinburg as part of the European-Asian legal congress on Thursday.

These higher educational establishments will have mutual agreements on granting scientific degrees, scientific titles and the qualifications of baccalaureate and magistrate degrees, he said.

The unification of educational standards could largely facilitate the settlement of many legal problems. Therefore, it is a very promising project for the development of the BRICS right to education, Singh said.

As earlier reported, the BRICS Network University headquarters will most likely be located in Yekaterinburg.

The BRICS Network University is a joint educational project, which is aimed at setting up a common education space, development of academic mobility, the provision of the BRICS economies with highly professional personnel in energy, economy, IT, ecology and other areas.

The agreements on establishing a network university of the BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) were reached by the education ministers of these countries in the UNESCO headquarters in Paris on November 5, 2013.

The devising of the BRICS system of universities is planned in similarity with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) University, which operates as a network of universities already functioning in the SCO member countries.
