Qatar to address UN Security Council over blockade, counts on Russia's support - ambassador in Moscow

MOSCOW. June 16 (Interfax) - Qatar is determined to address the UN Security Council if the neighboring states do not lift the transport blockade from it, Qatari Ambassador to Russia Fahad bin Mohammed Al-Attiyah said.

If mediation efforts do not help resolve this problem, Qatar is counting on support from the Security Council members, particularly Russia and the United States, which would have to condemn this violation of international law, make sure that the blockade is lifted, and get the conflicting parties to sit at the negotiating table, Al-Attiyah told Interfax.

It was reported earlier that Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and some other countries announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Qatar and imposed an air transport blockade on it, accusing the Qatari authorities of supporting terrorists, including Al Qaeda and Islamic State (both banned in Russia).

Doha described the accusations as unfounded.
