USRJC to meet in Washington on June 19-24 to discuss wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan
MOSCOW. June 18 (Interfax) - The next meeting of the U.S.-Russia Joint Commission on POWs/MIAs (USRJC) will take place in Washington on June 19-25, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Gen. Dmitry Bulgakov told reporters on Sunday.
"Joint Russian-U.S. activities in searching for and determining the fate of servicemen, who were reported missing during wars and armed conflicts, continue in accordance with the Defense Ministry's international activities plan for 2017," he said.
"Negotiations of heads and experts of working groups on the Vietnam War, the Cold War era, local conflicts and hostilities in Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989 are planned" during the commission's work, he said.
The commission is also planning to discuss the issues of preparation for and ensuring the work on the pilot project to digitize the U.S. National Archives' materials, Bulgakov said. Participation of the commission's members in the National League of POW/MIA Families' events commemorating those who went missing during wars and armed conflicts is scheduled for June 22. Andrei Taranov, the deputy head of the Russian Defense Ministry's department for the perpetuation of the memory of the people killed while defending the Fatherland, will lead the Russian delegation.
