Putin-Trump meeting opens barricaded door of Russian-U.S. relations - Klintsevich

MOSCOW. July 8 (Interfax) - The first meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump encourages optimism, the parties showed willingness to negotiate, Franz Klintsevich, the first deputy head of the Federation Council's defense and security committee, said.

"The meeting in Hamburg encourages optimism after all. Despite all disagreements accumulated for decades and objective divergence of interests of a geopolitical nation, Russia and the United States can and should make the world safer in cooperation with other countries," Klintsevich's press service cited him as saying.

The meeting fully lived up to expectations, he said.

"I mean both the meaningful outcomes of the meeting and its psychological effect, which is no less important in terms of the future prospects," he said.

The meeting "fully opened the barricaded up tight door of Russian-U.S. relations, simultaneously addressing all concerns about personal compatibility of two countries' leaders," he said.

"The parties showed their willingness not only to conduct negotiations, but also to reach agreements," he said.
