Suspect in attack on Russian tourists detained in Abkhazia

SUKHUM. July 13 (Interfax) - Abkhazian law enforcement agencies have detained one of the suspects in perpetrating an armed attack on Russian tourists and murder of one of them in the republic's Gudauta region, the Abkhazian Prosecutor General's Office press service said.

"Preliminary investigation bodies have detained a suspect of committing a murder, armed attack that took place in the community of Primorskoye, the Gudauta region, on July 11, 2017, during the search on July 12," the statement said.

The name of the detainee is not revealed.

"Measures are being undertaken to collect evidence of suspect's implication in perpetrating the crime," the republican oversight agency's press service said in the statement.

The law enforcement agencies are conducting an inquiry regarding 20 people with a prior criminal record as part of the inquiry into the attack on Russian tourists and the murder of one of them, the Abkhazian Interior Ministry press service said earlier.

Assailants armed with a knife and firearms have attacked a group of Russian tourists, namely two families with children, in the Gudauta region of Abkhazia on July 11. During the clash Russian citizen Andrei Kabanov died of chest knife wounds. Women and children were abducted, but they were released later.
