Rosatom to focus on complementarity of traditional, green energy

ASTANA. July 18 (Interfax) - The development of alternative energy sources should be balanced by traditional energy, Rosatom First Deputy General Director Kirill Komarov said.

"The academic opinion I have heard from a variety of experts is that a normal proportion of renewable energy sources should not exceed 40% in the country's energy balance. Or else it would be necessary to build enormous reservation facilities, which will be idle as long as those 40% will be in use and will be overloaded as long as those 40% fail to generate electricity for some reason; the national energy system will be unbalanced in that case," Komarov said at a panel session of the thematic week on atomic energy in Astana on Tuesday.

"I am not urging anyone to focus on those 40%, yet I suggest it become the starting point of debates. We definitely need to determine the place of every source in the future energy system," Komarov said.

Rosatom does not plan to set traditional and green energy against one another but puts emphasis on the complementarity of those sources, he said.

"We are not trying to set atomic energy against renewable energy sources. These are not antagonists, these are parts of a single green energy balance, and they supplement one another. We are seeking two objectives, such as truly green energy and sustainable balance. It is of paramount importance to determine the correct percentage: how much a particular source should account for," Komarov said.
