Two Dagestan residents suspected of abducting regional minister detained - Russian Investigative Committee

MOSCOW. July 24 (Interfax) - Two residents of Makhachkala suspected of kidnapping a minister of Russia's Republic of Dagestan have been detained in the republic and the minister has been released, the Investigative Committee press service said.

"Criminal proceedings have been launched against two residents of the city of Makhachkala. They are suspected of abduction committed by an organized group (Article 126 Part 3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), extortion (Article 163 Part 3 of the same) and illicit trafficking of weapons (Article 222 of the same)," the press service said in a report obtained by Interfax on Monday.

Investigators believe that on July 20, the two men in Makhachkala abducted the republic's minister of construction, architecture, housing and utilities, threatening him with fire arms, aiming to demand a large amount of money in exchange for his release.
