Moscow Helsinki Group reports death of diplomat, human rights activist Yury Ryzhov

MOSCOW. July 29 (Interfax) - Yury Ryzhov, diplomat, academician and recipient of the Moscow Helsinki Group's (MHG) award, has died at the age of 87.

"The Moscow Helsinki Group extends sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Yury Alexeyevich and mourns with them," the MHG said on its website on Saturday.

Ryzhov was born on October 28, 1930. He served as a deputy of the Soviet Union's Supreme Soviet and member of its Presidium in 1989-1991. He worked as the Russian ambassador to France in 1992-1999. He was also known for his human rights activities and received the MHG's award for historical contribution to human rights protection and human rights movement in 2016.

The wake for Ryzhov will take place the Sakharov Center, its time and date are not disclosed.
