Iranian advisors stationed in Syria at govt's invitation - Iranian diplomat

ASTANA. Aug 10 (Interfax) - Iranian expert advisors are stationed in Syria at the Syrian government's invitation, and Tehran's main aim is the counter-terrorism effort, Iranian Ambassador to Kazakhstan Mojtaba Damirchiloo told Interfax on Thursday.

"Iran is present in Syria at the moment only on the level of expert advisors at the Syrian government's invitation," Damirchiloo said when asked whether it is true that Iran plans to set up a naval base in Syria.

The main purpose of Iran's presence in Syria is to combat terrorism, which poses a threat to the entire region, he said.

"As concerns the establishment of a naval base in Syria, this comes from parties that are not in favor of peace and stability in this region. This comes from those who not only support terrorism but also act as sources of terrorism by occupying other countries' lands and committing violence there. Therefore, I don't want to comment on this matter," he said.
