Man attacking Surgut residents with knife gunned down following warning shot in air - Interior Ministry
MOSCOW. Aug 19 (Interfax) - The man, who had injured seven persons in Surgut on Saturday, resisted detention and was eliminated, the press service for the Russian Interior Ministry's department for the Khanty-Mansi autonomous district said.
"Witnesses reported to the police dispatch center of the Russian Interior Ministry's department for Surgut at 11:40 a.m. on August 19 that an unidentified man wearing a mask was inflicting stab wounds on passersby on Bazhov Street. The nearest police squad arrived on the incident site. The citizen resisted the police during detention," the press service said on the department's website.
"Policemen warned the wrongdoer with a shot in the air. Following it, he was eliminated," it said.
"It was tentatively established that the man had been able to inflict injuries of varying degrees of severity on seven citizens, all of them were admitted to Surgut hospital," it said.
Investigative and operational team is working on the scene in order to establish motives of the crime.
"Information that the attacker on passersby was possibly suffering from a mental disorder is currently being verified," it said.
