Poroshenko to propose during Normandy Format phone call declaring truce in Donbas effective from Aug 25 or Sept 1

KYIV. Aug 22 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is planning to raise the issue of declaring a ceasefire in Donbas effective from August 25 or September 1 during the conference call in the Normandy Format that he is going to attend on Tuesday evening, August 22.

"In three hours and half, I'm going to take part in a telephone conference in Kyiv tonight, where we will be insisting on both strengthening of the armed mission in Donbas and introducing of UN peacekeepers, and declaring of a ceasefire from August 25 or September 1 in order to at least let the children go to school," Poroshenko said during the ceremony of the opening of a renovated theater of musical drama in Sievierodonetsk, the Luhansk region, on Tuesday.

This is not for the first time that Ukraine calls for a truce and Kyiv thus demonstrates to the world its desire for peace and also "who is actually an aggressor that wants war", he went on.

"I am sure that we'll agree on this initiative with the German Chancellor [Angela Merkel] and the French President [Emmanuel Macron] and that we'll do all we can to make them stop firing in Donbas," Poroshenko said.
