Evraz starts shipping railway wheels to Deutsche Bahn, to deliver 1,440 units by end of 2017

MOSCOW. Aug 24 (Interfax) - Evraz Nizhny Tagil Metallurgical Plant (NTMK) has shipped the first consignment of 240 BA220 railway wheels for passenger cars to German railway operator Deutsche Bahn.

Evraz said that the consignment totaled 240 units. Evraz NTMK will manufacture and ship 1,440 wheels to Deutsche Bahn by the end of 2017.

"The new contract with Deutsche Bahn is the biggest and longest in the history of our partnership. Moreover, this is the first time we are supplying passenger wheels for the European market. Cooperation with the German operator will allow us to make a name for ourselves in a new product segment and bring about wide-ranging opportunities on the European market," Evraz Vice President for sales and logistics Ilya Shirokobrod was cited as saying in the statement.

BA220 railway wheels are a new product for the plant. As per the customer's request, the wheels are being coated with a special detector paint that changes the color if the wheel is heated to critical temperature during operation.

Evraz Group is a major vertically integrated metallurgical and mining company with assets in Russia, the United States, Italy, Czech Republic, Republic of South Africa, and Ukraine. Evraz is one of the biggest steel producers in the world with output of 13.5 million tonnes of steel in 2016. The company's iron ore and coke needs are virtually fully covered by its own mining assets.
