Criminal case opened after armed attack on Dagestan police

MAKHACHKALA. Aug 28 (Interfax) - A criminal case has been opened following an attack on police in Dagestan, in which one officer died, senior assistant head of the Russian Investigative Committee's Dagestani department Rasul Temirbekov told Interfax.

"It has been established that two unknown man stabbed two police officers with a knife at a gas station on Makhachkalinskaya Street in the city of Dagestan at approximately 9 a.m. on August 28, 2017. One officer died on the spot, and other was taken to hospital," Temirbekov said.

The police shot and killed the assailants; they are being identified, he said.

A criminal case was opened on counts of an attempt on the life of a law enforcement officer, Temirbekov said.

It was earlier reported citing an informed source that two police officers were killed in the attack. The information was not confirmed.
