Karimov's younger daughter says plans to step down as Uzbek permanent representative to UNESCO

MOSCOW. Aug 28 (Interfax) - First Uzbek President Islam Karimov's younger daughter Lola Karimova-Tillyayeva said she plans to resign as the country's permanent representative to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

"Upon completion of several current UNESCO projects I plan to give up my role as an ambassador in the near future and focus on my family, personal goals, programs being implemented by the Islam Karimov Foundation, other creative, cultural and charitable projects of our team," she said at the 'Central Asian Renaissance in the History of World Civilization' international conference in Samarkand on Monday.

"I am very grateful for these ten years, during which I have worked together with the best minds from the whole world, and I am again convinced that the beauty of the world lies in the diversity of people, and that humankind's strength and its future lie in its striving toward a great unity and solidarity," Karimova-Tillyayeva said in a speech posted on her Facebook page.

The first Uzbek president's younger daughter has led the country's permanent mission to UNESCO since 2008. At the same time, she is president of the Uzbek Gymnastics Federation, head of the 'You Are Not Alone' charitable foundation that was established in 2002 to extend aid to children, who were left without parental care, and the Republican Children's Social Adaptation Center.

Her husband Timur Tillyayev is a prominent businessman, whose activity is little known.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov died on September 2, 2016.

His elder daughter Gulnara Karimova, 45, is being held under arrest. She was found guilty of committing several real estate-related fraud and was sentenced to five years of imprisonment earlier in August 2015.
