Saipem to take part in construction of Nord Stream 2 after all, to build last section before Germany, shore approach

MOSCOW. Aug 31 (Interfax) - Italy's Saipem, which has already built many major facilities for Gazprom but had court disputes with its Russian clients, will nonetheless take part in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

Saipem said in a statement that it will build "the last section of the pipeline crossing the Baltic Sea and the shore approach in Greifswald, Germany."

The value of the contract has not been given in the statement.

Saipem, which built the LNG plant on Sakhalin and the Blue Stream and Nord Stream gas pipelines, enjoyed a privileged position on the Russian oil and gas construction market for many years. In 2015, Saipem filed a lawsuit against Gazprom subsidiary South Stream Transport BV for 700 million euros over revocation of the contract to build a gas pipeline under the Black Sea. The case spoiled its relations with the Russian gas giant and perhaps with Russia in general. In any case, the contracts for construction of the TurkStream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines went to a competitor, Swiss-based Allseas.
