Russia to create continuous OTH radar field for BMEWS by end of 2017 - chief designer
MOSCOW. Sept 1 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia will complete the creation of a continuous radar field for the ground segment of its ballistic missile early warning system (BMEWS) by the end of 2017, Sergei Boyev, the system's chief designer and chairman of the RTI board of directors, said.
"With regard to the closed radar field, from our point of view, with the deployment of the [radar] stations that we launched in 2016 - in Yeniseysk, in Barnaul and Orsk - it will be created. For the first time in history, by the way. This will happen at the end of 2017," Boyev said in an interview with the Kommersant newspaper published on Friday.
"I can also say that active work is underway to create high factory-readiness position-radar stations in Murmansk and Vorkuta," Boyev said.
Initially, the deadline had been set for 2020 but was later brought forward to 2018, he said, adding that the RTI had to reschedule a number of its projects to 2018 through the builders' fault.
"The Soviet Union did not have it [a continuous radar field] because the northeast high-risk missile sector was not closed. But with the introduction of the station in Yeniseysk we have closed it," Boyev said.
