Azerbaijan, U.S. plan comprehensive energy cooperation roadmap - Azerbaijani Energy Ministry

BAKU. Dec 23 (Interfax) - Azerbaijan and the United States plan to launch regular dialog and draft a comprehensive roadmap for energy cooperation, the Azerbaijani Energy Ministry said in a statement.

"Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov discussed energy cooperation at a meeting with U.S. Charge d'Affaires in Azerbaijan Amy Carlon. At the meeting, it was noted that there is a strong great interest and a positive attitude to the development of relations with Azerbaijan in Washington," the ministry said.

Issues related to the development of Azerbaijan-U.S. energy cooperation at a new stage were discussed. The results of the Energy Minister's visit to the United States were considered.

An exchange of views was held on cooperation between the two countries in the energy direction of the Strategic Partnership Charter, the "Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity" (TRIPP), various energy projects and other priority areas.

"The prospects for expanding cooperation with U.S. companies in the field of energy, the creation of a mechanism for regular dialogue in the field of energy and the development of a comprehensive roadmap were touched upon," the ministry said.

Azerbaijan and the U.S. have been expanding cooperation in energy, viewing it as a key area of bilateral relations. Baku and Washington signed a memorandum of cooperation in early August 2025, with expanding collaboration in the energy sector being one of the principal areas. On the same day, ExxonMobil and the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) signed a memorandum of cooperation.

ExxonMobil is one of Azerbaijan's long-standing partners in the oil and gas industry. The company holds a 6.79% stake in the contract to develop the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli fields (deep-water section), as well as a 2.5% stake in BTC Co, which operates the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline.

In early June 2025, the SOCAR and ExxonMobil Corporation agreed to a new format for cooperation in Azerbaijan's oil and gas sector by signing a memorandum of understanding. The document aims to develop further collaboration in the energy sector.

In addition, the U.S. actively supports the Southern Gas Corridor and the expansion of energy supplies from Azerbaijan to Europe.

The Southern Gas Corridor, which cost $33 billion to build, exports gas from the Caspian Sea region to Europe. Azerbaijan began exporting gas via the route on December 31, 2020.
