India will continue to buy Russian oil as it suits Delhi's needs - Indian finance minister

DELHI. Sept 5 (Interfax) - India will make decisions on oil purchases based on its own needs, Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday.

"India will continue to buy Russian oil. It is our decision to buy what suits our needs, where we buy our oil from, we will have to take a call on it," The Economic Times quoted Sitharaman as saying.

China and India are the largest buyers of Russian oil. An additional 25% tariff imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on goods from India due to India's ongoing purchases of Russian oil took effect on August 27. It added to Trump's prior 25% tariff imposed on products from India following the U.S. administration's revision of trade agreements with other countries, doubling tariffs facing India to 50%.

The Indian Foreign Ministry earlier described the U.S. actions as "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable."
