NBU to transfer UAH 84.2 bln to Ukraine's state budget based on 2024 results

MOSCOW. April 21 (Interfax) - The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) will transfer UAH 84.2 billion to the state budget after the terms are agreed upon with the Ukrainian Finance Ministry, Ukrainian media reported, citing NBU Governor Andrei Pyshny.

"This is the largest amount the NBU has ever transferred to the budget," Pyshny was quoted by the media as saying in a statement released by the NBU's press service.

As of December 31, 2024, the NBU's total assets reached UAH 2.7 trillion, exceeding the previous year's figure, which stood at UAH 2.39 trillion, the statement said.

The assets were still based on international reserves, in particular, securities of non-residents amounting to UAH 1.235 trillion, funds and deposits in foreign currency totaling UAH 487.1 billion, and securities of the country's government UAH 714.8 billion.

The NBU's assets grew in 2024 mainly due to an 8% increase in international reserves to $43.8 billion, in particular, the volume of non-resident securities increased 15% and foreign currency deposits rose 30%.

"As of December 31, 2024, the NBU's liabilities reached UAH 2.132 billion, which is 79% of the currency of the balance sheet (liabilities)," the regulator said.

In 2024, changes in the NBU's liabilities involved a 7.6% increase in the volume of banknotes and coins in circulation to UAH 822.6 billion, doubled funds of government agencies to UAH 278.2 billion, as well as a 11.7% decline in the volume of deposit certificates to UAH 548.9 billion.

At the same time, the NBU's equity capital gained 35% to UAH 567.6 billion, mainly due to higher revaluation reserves caused by changes in the official exchange rate.

The regulator's financial result for 2024 amounted to UAH 231 billion. Its main components were net interest income totaling UAH 17.6 billion and positive revaluation of financial instruments by nearly UAH 200 billion due to changes in the official exchange rate and fair value of assets.

Of this amount, UAH 128.6 billion is an outstanding result of exchange rate changes and is reflected as a revaluation reserve in the NBU's capital under the legislation.

"Expenses of the National Bank involved in the manufacture of banknotes, coins and other products, personnel costs, administrative and other expenses in 2024 totaled UAH 8.1 billion (in 2023, it was UAH 7.0 billion)," the statement said.

At the end of 2024, the profit to be distributed by the NBU totaled UAH 102.7 billion. In accordance with the law on the National Bank of Ukraine, part of this amount will be channeled to the NBU's general reserves until reaching the 10% level of the average annual volume of its monetary liabilities, which is UAH 18.5 billion.
