Russian tourist flow to Japan more than doubles in 2024

MOSCOW. Jan 17 (Interfax) - Almost 100,000 Russian tourists visited Japan in 2024, or 2.3 times the figure for the previous year, the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) said in a statement on Friday.

"Some 99,300 people travelled from Russia to Japan in 2024, or 136.6% more than the year before. In 2023 tourist flows from Russia stood at 41,960. In December 2024, 5,900 Russians visited Japan, or 1.8 times as many (3,250) as in the same period the year before," the statement said.

Total Japan-bound tourist flows in 2024 exceeded 36.86 million, an increase by 15.6% on the pre-pandemic year of 2019 and 47.1% more than in 2023, the statistics said. The top three countries by outbound tourist were South Korea (8.81 million), China (6.98 million) and Taiwan (6.04 million).
