EBRD provides Uzbekistan with $66 mln loan to build power transmission line

TASHKENT. Dec 26 (Interfax) - The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has provided a loan of $66.4 million to JSC National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan under state guarantees to build a high-voltage power transmission line that will connect the northwest and southwest of the country, the bank said in a press release.

The project involves building a 500 kV power transmission line with a length of 230 km between the settlements of Sarymai in the Khorezm region and Muruntau in the Navoiy region.

Building the line will enhance the reliability and stability of the electricity supply in Uzbekistan. The project will help eliminate bottlenecks in the energy system and reduce power outages, especially during peak load periods. It will also facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources into the energy system, as outlined in Uzbekistan's low-carbon energy development strategy developed with the EBRD's support.

It is expected that the project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 4,143 tonnes per year and decrease electricity losses by 34,600 MWh annually.

The EBRD has invested approximately 5.3 billion euros in 171 projects in Uzbekistan to date.
