Uzbekistan's deputy presidential adviser Ishmetov appointed governor of Central Bank

TASHKENT. Dec 11 (Interfax) - Uzbekistan's Senate, the upper house of parliament, or the Oliy Majlis, has approved the president's nomination and appointed Timur Ishmetov as governor of the Central Bank of Uzbekistan, a source in the Senate told Interfax.

The source recalled that Uzbekistan's Senate appoints and dismisses the governor of the Central Bank upon the proposal of the country's president in accordance with the law "On the Central Bank".

The source also said that President Shavkat Mirziyoyev submitted a motion to the Senate to dismiss Mamarizo Nurmuratov as governor of the Central Bank, with Mirziyoyev proposing Ishmetov to replace him.

The Senate's press service later officially confirmed Ishmetov's appointment as governor of the Central Bank.

Ishmetov graduated from the Financial Institute and Law University in Tashkent, and received a Master's degree in International Money and Banking from the UK's University of Birmingham.

Ishmetov has held various positions at the Central Bank of Uzbekistan. He was first deputy chairman of the State Investment Committee, first deputy chairman of the Central Bank, and the country's Finance Minister.

Prior to the current appointment, Ishmetov held the position of first deputy adviser to the president on development of economic sectors, and implementation of investment and trade policy.

Sources indicate that Nurmuratov, who had headed the Central Bank since 2017, will remain at the bank as an adviser to the governor.
