Interfax Financial News Agency (Interfax-FNA) is set up in September and rapidly becomes the key news source for players at the fledgling Russian financial market.

Interfax Ukraine News Agency is launched, soon to become the country's largest agency. In the following years Interfax will form news agencies in all major countries of the former Soviet Union and in the largest regions of Russia from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok.

1991

In January, Soviet authorities impose closure of Interfax and evict it from its premises. Within hours the Agency resumed activities in the building of the Russian Supreme Soviet, which was then led by Boris Yeltsin, the future first president of Russia. In June Interfax launches the Soviet Business Report, the first business news bulletin in the Soviet Union. In July Interfax opens a company in the United States to sell its products abroad. Within a year sales offices in London and Frankfurt will follow, later in Hong Kong and Warsaw. Interfax's coverage of the August 1991 coup is nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.
