Interfax becomes the most frequently cited Russian news agency in foreign and domestic media in 2016

Interfax has continued to lead news agencies working in Russia by number of citations in leading foreign and Russian mass media outlets in 2016, according to a study based on an analysis of publications available in Factiva, the worlds largest database of international media, as well as SCAN (System for Comprehensive Analysis of News).

Interfax leads the rating of three Russian news agencies by citation in foreign media based on an analysis of publications in the Factiva archive (around 33,000 leading news and business sources).

According to Factiva, Interfax leads in the worlds largest new agencies by number of citations almost in almost all sources.

Interfax was cited 1,143 times in the English-language newswires of leading international news agency Reuters in 2015, while RIA Novosti and TASS were cited 861 and 555 times respectively.

In the English-language newswires of Dow Jones, Factiva data shows, Interfax was cited 839 times, while TASS and RIA Novosti were cited, respectively, 144 and 31 times.

German agency DPA (German-language) cited Interfax 815 times last year, while citing TASS 337 times and RIA Novosti 22 times.

Factiva shows that in the period from January 1 to December 31, 2016, Interfax was cited 1,342 times by the BBC English-language radio station (RIA - 701; TASS - 467); 381 times by France Presse (French-language) (RIA - 251; TASS - 247); 258 times by Spanish agency EFE (RIA - 118; TASS - 48); 581 times by Italian agency ANSA (TASS - 747; RIA - 155).

The study of how often Russias three leading news agencies were cited in the Russian media was based on the SCAN information resource, which contains around 23,000 sources.

In Russian central and national print media (around 300 of the most authoritative newspapers and magazines), Interfax was cited 14,855 times, while TASS and RIA Novosti were cited 10,160 and 6,092 times respectively.

In the category of regional print publications in the 19 most densely populated Russian regions, Interfax ranked first in 13: St. Petersburg, Bashkortostan, Krasnoyarsk, Perm, Primorye and Khabarovsk territories, Volgograd, Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Rostov, Samara and Chelyabinsk regions.

TASS led in the Krasnodar territory, Irkutsk, Kemerovo, Saratov and Sverdlovsk region. RIA Novosti was the first in Tatarstan.
