Interfax presents annual university rating, names best universities by parameters Innovation and entrepreneurship, and brand

Interfax International Information Services Group has presented the seventh annual National Rating of Universities (NRU), based on results for 2016.

The National Rating of Universities in 2016, like a year earlier, is led by Lomonosov Moscow State University. Second and third places are shared by National Nuclear Research University MEPhI and Novosibirsk State University.

The countrys top ten universities also include Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (NRU), St. Petersburg State University, Higher School of Economics National Research University, Bauman Moscow State Technical University (NRU), RUDN University, Tomsk State University and Tomsk Polytechnic University.

NRU-2016 ranks 238 Russian universities, including 67 classical universities (including 1 private university), 57 technical and technology universities (including architecture and construction, transportation and mining universities), 29 national research universities, 24 agricultural universities, 13 medical universities, 11 support universities, 11 economic universities (including 2 private), 10 federal universities, 10 pedagogical and linguistics universities, 4 law universities and 2 national universities.

Universities were assessed according to six main parameters: education activities; research activities; social environment; internationalization (international activities); innovation and entrepreneurship (technology entrepreneurship); and brand.

The weight ratio of the first two parameters is 0.2 for each parameter, while that of each of the other parameters is 0.15. The assessment is conducted on the basis of processing data from surveys filled out by representatives of universities, publicly available data posted by educational institutions on their official websites, public data from the information resources of the Education and Science Ministry of Russia, as well as information from the information and analysis systems SPARK (www.spark-interfax.ru, ) and SCAN (www.scan-interfax.ru, ).

Interfax has also published the results of ratings of Russian universities by Innovation and Entrepreneurship and by Brand.

The leaders in the rating by Innovation and Entrepreneurship were National Nuclear Research University MEPhI, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (NRU) and Bauman Moscow State Technical University (NRU).

Universities were assessed in the area of innovation and entrepreneurship by the following criteria: patent portfolio; cooperation with high-tech companies; development of innovation infrastructure; income from research and development; and participation of research and teaching staff and students in the work of specialized departments set up with companies and research institutes.

The top three university brands in 2016 were Lomonosov Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University and Higher School of Economics National Research University.

The biggest advances in NRU-2016 by the measure of university Brand were made by ITMO University, Ural Federal University and Novosibirsk State University.

University brands were assessed by criteria such as contribution to the formation of the national elite; communication with target audience; media activity; and perception of research in the international and Russian-language academic communities.

As noted in the rating report, measures of universities communications activity were factored into the rating for the first time. The reason for this was that 2016 saw noticeable changes in the communications policies of many of the countrys leading universities.
