Russia's coal output totals 438 mln tonnes, exports 213 mln tonnes in 2023

MOSCOW. Jan 25 (Interfax) - Russia's coal production totaled 438 million tonnes and exports totaled 213 million tonnes in 2023, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said in an article in the Energy Policy publication.

As previously reported, output was estimated at 443.6 million tonnes and exports were estimated at 210.9 million tonnes in 2022, implying a decline of 1.26% year-on-year in coal production and growth of 1% year-on-year in exports in 2023.

Russia ramped up exports to China by 52% year-on-year and to India by 43% year-on-year in 2023, with the share of coal exports to the BRICS countries totaling 46%, Novak said.

Russia's coal exports should hold at 220 million tonnes per year in the coming years owing to increasing global demand, and the main importers of Russian coal should remain China, India, and Turkey, Novak expects.

Russia's coal production and exports could remain at 2023 levels in 2024, Energy Minister Nikolai Shulginov said in December during an interview with the Rossiya 24 TV channel.
