EU extends sanctions on individuals it views as responsible for destabilizing Moldova

BRUSSELS. April 26 (Interfax) - The Council of the European Union announced on Friday that the EU was extending the effect of its sanctions against those it views as threatening Moldova's stability for another year.

"The Council today decided to prolong the restrictive measures against those responsible for actions aimed at destabilizing, undermining or threatening the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Moldova, until April 29, 2025," the Council of the EU said in a statement on its website.

The EU's restrictions currently apply to 11 individuals and one legal entity. They are subject to an asset freeze. The document also prohibits making economic resources available to them directly or indirectly, and the designated individuals are barred from entering and transiting through EU territories.

The Council of the EU launched its sanctions at Moldova's request in April 2023. The restrictions were later imposed, in particular, on Ilan Shor, the chairman of the Shor party, its deputy chair Marina Tauber, former Democratic Party leader and businessman Vladimir Plahotniuc, and the Scutul Poporului (People's Shield) association.
