Admiral Gorshkov to make refueling stopover in Hawaii area

MOSCOW. May 15 (Interfax) - The Admiral Gorshkov frigate, which is one of the most advanced ships in the Russian Navy, will make a stopover in the Hawaii area, the Russian Northern Fleet's press service said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Admiral Gorshkov armed with Kalibr cruise missiles is on a long-range voyage together with the Nikolai Chiker tugboat and the Elbrus replenishment vessel.

"The ships are bound for the central part of the Pacific Ocean. They will make a stopover in the Hawaii area for being refueled by the Kama tanker, which is moving slightly ahead of the group," the statement said.

The Admiral Gorshkov will practice deterrence of an air strike and destruction of high-speed surface targets using an A-192 artillery system, it said.

The group departed from Severomorsk on February 26. This is the first voyage for the frigate. The Admiral Gorshkov has covered over 16,500 nautical miles by now. It has carried out several defense drills and visited ports in Djibouti and Sri Lanka for replenishment and rest.

In late April, the Admiral Gorshkov participated in the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Chinese Navy and visited the Pacific Fleet's main base in Vladivostok to celebrate the V-Day.
