Al-Assad receives Russian delegation to discuss political settlement
MOSCOW. Sept 15 (Interfax) - A Russian inter-agency delegation has met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to discuss the issues of political settlement in the region.
"On September 12, Syrian President [Bashar] al-Assad received a Russian inter-agency delegation, including Special Presidential Representative for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin and representatives of the Russian Defense Ministry," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website on Sunday.
"The discussion was focused on swiftly finalizing the Constitutional Committee's formation and launch as an important stage of promoting the political process led and implemented by the Syrians themselves with the help of the United Nations, in conformity with the decisions of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi and under UN Security Council Resolution 2254," it said.
"Also, issues discussed in detail at the meeting included the current situation 'on the ground' in Syria, with an emphasis on the need for stabilization in Idlib, as the fight against terrorists recognized as such by the UN Security Council continues," it said.
"There was an exchange of views at the meeting with regard to post-conflict rehabilitation in Syrian Arab Republic, assistance to returning Syrian refugees, and maintaining security in the Middle East on the basis of respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of regional nations," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
