Kremlin denies rumors that church construction in Yekaterinburg part of big construction plan
MOSCOW. May 16 (Interfax) - Reports that the plan to build the Church of St. Catherine on Yekaterinburg's Oktyabrskaya Square is part of a construction plan for the territory of a public garden are not true, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.
"There's a lot of false information. I've contacted the planned construction company. The reports that this church is simply part of a big construction plan and that other buildings and centers are also envisaged there are untrue," Peskov told reporters.
"You should also know that we're talking about improvements in this park zone. That should also be taken into account [by those who have] concerns that this park will cease to exist," he said.
Mass protests against the plans to Church of St. Catherine on Yekaterinburg's Oktyabrskaya Square, where a public garden is currently located, began in Yekaterinburg on May 13. The law enforcement agencies are dispersing rallies held near the fence put up at construction site and a number of participants are being detained and further arrested.
